Fatal Flaws
WHY BANTAMSKLIP SHOULD NOT BE USED AS NUCLEAR POWER STATION SITE
Negative impacts and threats if the proposed Eskom nuclear power station should be constructed less than 50km from Hermanus:
- Threatens the site, Groot Hagelkraal, a center of endemism and core area of the Cape Floral Kingdom, is of UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
- Threatens 800 plant species and 22 red data species, of which 6 occur nowhere else in the world, except on this potential World Heritage Site.
- Threatening the integrity of untransformed nature and sustainability of the Protected and Management Areas of Agulhas National Park, Cape Nature and the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI), and the Nuwejaars Special Management Area (SMA)
- Threatens the sustainable harvesting of essential, kelp marine ecosystem resources
- Threatens the marine food chain and food sources of Overberg coastal communities
- Threatens income and employment in all eco-tourism and sustainable tourism industries on the Whale and Fynbos Road routes
- Threatening the long term property values and prospects and taxability of the coastal property investment industry
- Threatening protected bird species like Blue Cranes, Stanley’s bustard and white storks to an exponential increase in deaths from overhead power line collisions.
- Threatening the marine sanctuaries of Southern Right Whales and Great White Sharks, as well as the occurrence of other fish and marine species generally due to sonic noise, the warming of the ocean, biocide pollution and Strontium-90 contamination
- Threatens access to Agulhas National Park’s western entrance with unmitigated visual pollution
- Threatening terrestrial nature based tourism industry, increasingly operated on the basis of “responsible tourism standards” and the need to qualify for certification under “Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa”
- Threatening the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative as a unique pilot project serving the interests of conservation and employment and livelihood of communities on the Agulhas plains
- Threatening the African Penguin colony on Dyer Island, already threatened due to over-fishing and other ecological impacts
- Threatened by the limited life span of Nuclear Power Stations which becomes radioactive waste requiring removal and disposal of the entire structure after 30-40 years
